Seventy kilometres of winter hiking in the Andermatt area

Walk through deeply snowed landscapes and enjoy the bracingly cold air. You’ll find numerous winter hiking trails around Andermatt. All of them are well-groomed and signposted with pink markers.
Network of hiking trails
In the Andermatt region, there are winter hiking trails to suit every taste. The network of carefully groomed and well-signposted trails extends from Realp in the Ursern Valley to Disentis in the Surselva: from the frozen Arnisee reservoir in the scenic snowy woods to the sun-filled hike from Sedrun to Disentis. You can choose from any number of possibilities, depending on the weather and what you’re up for.

From Andermatt up Nätschen
The path up Nätschen follows Oberalpstrasse, and you’ll be sharing the road with other winter sports enthusiasts. In summer, this is where racing bikers, motorcyclists and drivers of classic cars or sports cars wind their way up to the pass. You'll be on foot, allowing you to enjoy the sunny slope and the panorama. The higher you get, the farther the view toward the Urseren Valley and Gotthard. Once you reach the top of Nätschen, you can enjoy a refreshing beverage at the Matti family restaurant or on the sunny terrace at Restaurant Nätschen or Alp-Hittä before setting out for the descent back to the valley. If you want to go only part of the way on foot, you can use the Gütsch Express gondola or the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway for the other.

Start out at 2,300 metres above sea level
The starting point for this winter hike around Stöckli is the mountain station of the Gütsch Express gondola. The hike is two kilometres long with virtually no climb. Therefore, it’s also suitable for families. The panorama is gorgeous, offering a nearly 360-degree view. The quiet amidst the snowy winter wonderland is interrupted only by the excited cries of winter sports enthusiasts on the nearby piste and the soft whirring of wind turbines.

A tour for the afternoon
The circuit hike from Sedrun to Ruera takes about one and a half hours and offers many opportunities for stopping off for a bite to eat. Since part of the trail is in the valley, a hike in deep winter is best taken after midday in order to get maximum sunshine. Starting out from the Sedrun railway station, you’ll first head to the Strem creek, where the winter hiking trail leads to Rueras along the railway line. From there, it's on to the valley floor, which is very close to the Rhine river. The route back leads along the cross-country ski trail to the power station and then on to Camischolas and back to the railway station.

Public transportation
The villages in the Andermatt, Sedrun and Disentis ski region are linked by the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, and the trip across the Oberalp Pass offers an unparalleled view of the snowy mountain peaks. That means that you can travel conveniently to the various starting points, or return by train after a hike.
