Sustainable mobility in the Gotthard region

December 12, 2023

Public transport can make a decisive contribution to sustainable tourism. It is obvious that the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway ( MGBahn ) is involved with Alpine Mobility , the association for sustainable mobility services in the Andermatt holiday region. Joint solutions are emerging, particularly at Andermatt railway station as the region's central transport hub and throughout the Ursern Valley.

The partners are focussing on seamless, environmentally friendly connections from origin to destination, including the so-called first and last mile. This would allow users to dispense with their own private modes of transport. The services are to be available during the day and into the off-peak hours.

There is great potential at Andermatt railway station as a link between the historic village and the new Andermatt Reuss district. Located in the centre of the main town in this dynamic region, the station offers the best opportunities for seamless onward transport according to individual needs.

For example, combined offers from the MGBahn and mybuxi, the provider of on-demand journeys and also a member of Alpine Mobility, are conceivable. Taking the train to the village centre and from there continuing with mybuxi to your final destination
according to your needs - such a solution would offer locals, employees and guests a continuous mobility chain.

Another connection option would be to continue the journey individually by bike. Discussions have already begun about setting up a PubliBike station at the railway station.
All partners benefit from membership of Alpine Mobility, as additional customer groups can be tapped into and their own services become even more attractive. The cooperation provides users with a complementary range of collective modes of transport. This satisfies individual needs much better than the separate mobility solutions.

The Alpine Mobility association was founded in 2021 as a non-profit organisation and has been committed to sustainable mobility in the Gotthard region ever since. The 365-day on-demand mobility service mybuxi was the first mobility initiative to be launched in summer 2021. The second e-car sharing initiative, Sponti-Car, was launched in November 2023. A further two initiatives will go live in 2024. The association was founded by Andermatt Swiss Alps and mybuxi AG. After Schweizerische Südostbahn AG (SOB), MGBahn is now the second railway company to join the association.
