Our carbon footprint

The Andermatt Swiss Alps Group monitors its greenhouse gas emissions by regularly calculating its carbon footprint.

In 2021 the total emissions of the Andermatt Swiss Alps Group amounted to 22,435.5 tCO₂e, which was 18.51 percent more than in 2019. The reason for this rise was the intensive construction work in Andermatt Reuss and the high occupancy of hotels and holiday apartments. However, because guest numbers rose, greenhouse gas emissions per overnight guest fell from 27.22 kg CO₂e (2019) to 18.96 kg CO₂e. In the ski area, emissions per skier day dropped from 29.42 kg CO₂e (2019) to 13.58 kg CO₂e, even though the number of admissions in 2021 was substantially lower than in 2019 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. This dramatic difference was due, in particular, to infrastructure projects on the mountain, which were completed in 2019.

Low indirect emissions

At 1,813.3 tCO₂e, the direct emissions of the Andermatt Swiss Alps Group were about a half a percent lower than in 2019. Indirect emissions were very low, because power and heat are supplied to all of the Group’s new buildings in a climate-neutral manner. In addition, the lifts in the ski area are operated with CO₂-neutral power from the region. As a result, scope 2 emissions in 2021 amounted to just 158.7 tCO₂e for the entire company. Most greenhouse gas emissions were attributable to upstream and downstream activities. These were about 20 percent higher than in 2019, which was also due to the higher occupancy of lodgings and to construction work.
