The perfect hiking region

The Andermatt region offers excellent hiking opportunities. Trails at all levels of difficulty lead through secluded valleys and past cosy alpine huts, ice-cold mountain lakes, and impressive waterfalls. And of course to peaks with 360-degree views.
High-altitude hiking to Lutersee
The Gütsch Express gondola will take you effortlessly from the Andermatt railway station up the mountain to 2,300 metres above sea level. From there, a simple hiking trail leads to Lutersee. The small bathing lake is the perfect spot for a picnic and – for the courageous – a dip in the cold water. The circuit trail will take you further to the Platten mid-station of the Schneehüenerstock Express, where you can take the gondola to Oberalp Pass and from there return to Andermatt with the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. The hike is also suitable for families.

Through Switzerland’s oldest conservation area
A popular long hike from Andermatt leads to the Felli Valley, one of the oldest conservation areas in Switzerland. The trail starts on the Oberalp Pass, and the hike up to the Felli Gap takes about 1.5 hours. From the one side, you have a view of the Urseren Valley and the Surselva; from the other, you can see far into the midlands. Then, the descent takes you through the Felli Valley and across the high plateau Murmetsbüehl, after which you reach the Tresch Hut, whose setting amidst mountain pines makes it the perfect spot for a break. After the Wassner Forest, where robbers and bandits once ambushed freight haulers, you’ll reach Gurtnellen. From there, you can take regularly operating public transportation back to Andermatt.

Furka Höhenweg
Enjoy a spectacular hiking experience on the lofty Furka Höhenweg. It is divided into two stages and starts in Valais. So why not journey to Andermatt on foot, like in days of yore?
Day 1
From Oberwald in the canton of Valais, the trail follows the headwaters of the Rhône river toward the Furka Pass. Along the way, you’ll be presented with sensational views of the Rhône Glacier, the Lauteraarhorn and Finsteraarhorn peaks, and the entire Goms region. The historic Furka rail line also crosses over the pass. If you're lucky, you’ll see one of the old-time steam trains that still travel this route today. Near the top of the pass, you’ll find a variety of lodging options.
Day 2
On the second day, you’ll first keep hiking at altitude. The trail lies high above the Ursern Valley, following the rugged southeastern slopes. You’ll pass by small lakes, alpine flowers, and mountain streams, all the while enjoying impressive views down toward Realp and Hospental, as well as of the pass road and the historic Furka steam train. You can find all information about the Furka Höhenweg on the website of Schweiz Mobil.

Looking for a challenge?
You can find numerous challenging tours around Andermatt Swiss Alps – for example, the alpine hikes to the triple intercontinental watershed at 3,025 metres above sea level. A small metal sculpture marks the spot where the direction of the wind determines whether the rain will end up in the North Sea, the Adriatic or the Mediterranean. For hikers who are inexperienced but in good physical shape, we recommend hiring a mountain guide for these tours.

From hut to hut
There are a wealth of mountain huts in the region around Andermatt Swiss Alps. Here you’ll find 21 huts, some of which are connected to a well-developed network of hiking trails. Take an alpine panorama tour from hut to hut or discover the individual huts on day hikes. Get the Uri Hut Pass and win great prizes after just three hut visits.

Easy to reach
The starting points for hikes in the region can be easily reached with cableways and public transportation. During the summer season, Post Bus operates several coaches daily over the Furka Pass and the Gotthard Pass. You can reach the top of the Oberalp Pass with the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, which operates hourly.
