Golf course architecture

One-of-a-kind course

The 18-hole, par-72 championship course in Andermatt bears the hallmarks of Kurt Rossknecht, Germany’s most renowned golf course architect. The top architect skilfully embeds golf courses in existing landscapes.

Hand-in-hand with nature

When creating golf courses, Kurt Rossknecht takes the current terrain into account and lets the course blend with the surroundings to form a harmonious whole. For Rossknecht, designing courses is an interplay in and with nature. His aim is to integrate a golf course into the landscape as authentically as possible. According to Rossknecht, Andermatt’s high altitude and especially its diverse soil qualities – from rock to bog – were a challenge in technical terms.

The ecologically-designed 18-hole golf course is immediately adjacent to the village, beautifully embedded in the spectacular natural setting.

We were successful in creating a high-quality, well-designed golf course. Andermatt Swiss Alps Golf Course is without doubt one of the golf courses in Europe where golfers will long remember their round.

Extraordinary area

The unique landscape of the Ursern Valley, with its impressive mountains, streams, lakes, rock formations, and wildflower meadows, is largely free of trees. The golf course thus has many elements of a Scottish links course. But because of the mountain backdrop and the water hazards, it’s also completely different from a Scottish course, says Rossknecht.

Years of experience

Kurt Rossknecht, who holds a degree in landscape architecture, is known for his fine sense of layout, idyllically situated courses and love of detail. He has been designing golf courses for more than 30 years. In 1988 he opened his own firm, with which he has built more than 70 courses around the world and modernised or expanded 30 others.
